Occasionally you see a paper and think, “That’s brilliant, I never considered that!” While educational research papers always include descriptions of their participants, Luke and colleagues took it a step further, using semi-structured interviews to understand the learner’s experience of being a research participant.
Take-home points:
- Residents reported it was their professional responsibility to participate. Why? It was important to further the broader field and support the research of local colleagues.
- In addition, it afforded opportunities to participate in educational experiences that might not otherwise be available.
- They also divulged some concerns about feeling pressure to participate and worried about personal ramifications if there was a loss of confidentiality.
- Time was of the essence: residents stated the most important factor on whether they would participate was time.
