Maximizing Your Shine: Altering Your Career Journey to Include Leadership Opportunities

Objective/ Background: Objective/Background

Traditional medical education positions of Clerkship Director, Vice Chair of Education, Residency Program Director, or Assistant Dean of Student Affairs may not be available to all faculty despite having a strong interest in education. The rise to such academic leadership roles takes focus and typically still results in a rewarding albeit non-linear career journey. The goal of this workshop is to empower participants to consider alternative leadership roles, brainstorm how these positions can flex to fit into their career goals, and navigate their professional journey to strategize for success and fulfilment. The authors are in various stages of their careers and each holds different positions within their institutions despite starting their careers having similar interest as medical educators.

The authors will guide multiple breakout small group discussions utilizing a worksheet. The first will encourage discussion amongst participants regarding their medical education or leadership focused career goals. The second and third will brainstorm methods for advancing the participants\' careers through consideration of alternative leadership positions and emphasize skills to develop a career advancement strategy. Additionally, participants will discuss opportunities and resources available for career development such as utilizing mentors and leadership courses. We will conclude the session by encouraging participants to share their ideas with the group.
