Passing the torch: Fostering near-peer mentoring through an interactive, student-led review session

Objective: As the OB-GYN specialty has seen a steady rise in residency application volume, near-peer mentoring can be an important approach to supporting medical students as they consider a career in the specialty and prepare to apply to residency.  Students are often looking for a range of mentors to meet their needs and near-peer mentors fill a very necessary gap for some students.  A student-developed NBME subject exam review session implemented as an optional portion of the OB/GYN clerkship provides a platform for approachable fourth year OB/GYN applicants to connect with third year medical students early in this crucial decision-making time period. Preliminary data suggest this session successfully provided an opportunity for valuable mentoring within the OB-GYN specialty.
