Objective: As residency programs move away from traditional metrics of evaluating applicants, introducing professional development opportunities early in undergraduate medical education may increase medical students’ success in preparing for the OB/Gyn specialty. Program Directors consider interpersonal skills, scholarly projects and leadership qualities as important factors for evaluating applicants making it critical to not only create opportunities that allow for applicants to demonstrate success in these domains, but also introducing them early in medical school. Traditionally, specialty interest groups have offered opportunities for networking with peers and physicians working in the specialty, while also offering opportunities for clinical shadowing and research. Introducing professional development to the pre-clinical students can also maximize the time to develop these skills and participate in opportunities that will add to the long-term professional development and ultimately improvement in the healthcare system.
Methods: Interactive workshop where we will discuss current purpose and activities in OB/Gyn Interest Groups, identify the professionalism gaps between pre-clinical and clinical medical students and discuss how professional development opportunities and skills can be incorporated to meet students’ needs.
Results: We will review the results of a multi-institutional \'Needs Assessment Survey\' which was completed members of the OB/Gyn Student Interest Group. Also review ideas of a multi-institutional intervention of incorporating professional development into the OB/Gyn Interest Group
Conclusion/ Discussion: Participants will leave with a developed toolkit of ideas and resources for incorporating professional development for medical students through their OB/Gyn interest group.
