Leaving lectures in the desert dust: Teaching critical thinking, from vision to reality.
Roundtable APGO Fac Dev Seminar
Précis: Facilitators will share their experience flipping their clerkship from 28 hours of passive
didactic lectures to rechanneling content delivery into only a few hours of didactic lectures, self-directed
learning, and active learning using critical thinking cards and illness scripts.
Round Table Text: Objective: To learn how to teach critical thinking and increase active
learning in the clerkship. Discussion Points: We will begin with an overview of active learning.
We will discuss the skill of critical thinking, its importance, and the challenges teaching and
assessing this skill. We will review several techniques (illness scripts, thought maps) used to
teach critical thinking. Participants will work in pairs. Each pair will be given a chief complaint
and use one of the techniques to practice the skill of critical thinking. Participants will leave
with a set of our cards and illness script templates.
