Round Table Text: Sexual Health History Taking--‐ How We Teach It! Competency training for OB/GYN clerkship students Authors: Tammy Sonn, MDMichelle Lincshoten, MPH, MSWObjectives/Background: Medical students training in the United States often ignore directed teaching about sexual health history taking. Currently, many medical students and practicing physicians still express discomfort discussing sex with patients and dissatisfaction in the training opportunities at their schools. The objectives of this round table discussion:1.Fulfill and accomplish the below related topics in the APGO Educational Objectives, 10th editiona.Educational Topic 1D: Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that build trust by addressing relevant factors including culture, ethnicity, language/ literacy, socioeconomic status, spirituality/religion, age, sexual orientation and disabilityb.Educational Topic 56A: Obtain a sexual history, including sexual function and sexual orientation c.Educational Topic 57A: Identify patients at increased risk for sexual assault2.Share our teaching session and resources to further explore directed and intentional teaching 3.Provide a model of collaboration with resources like a School of Social Work Major Discussion Points:1.Re--‐evaluate and discuss the methods currently used to teach sexual history taking2.Know and have the resources of our teaching session:a.Video clipsb.Tips to avoid pitfall statements based on biases c.Awareness of local resources to share with health care team and patientd.Incorporate a role playing exercise for practice and small group discussion
