Study Objective: The objective of this study was to identify a threshold score for success on ABOG Written Examination.
Methods: CREOG In-training exam (ITE) and ABOG written examination results collected from 2001 to 2013, inclusive, from residents who completed 4 years of CREOG In-Training Examinations at Reading Hospital and The Greenville Health System. Scores were analyzed to identify a threshold score that would predict ABOG written examination outcome.
Results: Seventy-one residents, with an overall pass rate of 81.7%, were included for analysis. A threshold of 200 was a good predictor of ABOG pass rates. Specifically, a score of 200 on CREOG ITE as a PGY4, or twice in any of the PGY1 – PGY4 years, resulted in a 100% ABOG written exam pass rate. A score of ≥ 205 at any time was also associated with a 100% pass rate. If the resident was unable to obtain 200, as defined above, the resident had almost a 40% chance of failing the ABOG written examination.
Conclusions: CREOG ITE was designed to provide feedback for the resident and program. With increased pressure to ensure successful completion of residency training and passing the ABOG written examination, identification of a success threshold would be useful for residents and programs. Results of this study indicate that residents would benefit by attaining a CREOG ITE score of at least 200. Scores lower than this value should be used by the resident and program to identify weaknesses and provide appropriate educational interventions.
