Objective: To determine whether weekly reading program quiz scores and USMLE Step 3 scores can predict annual CREOG exam scores in an OB/GYN residency.
Study Design: The study included 14 OB/GYN residents at the Naval Medical Center San Diego who participated in the weekly reading program quizzes in 2011 and the January 2012 annual CREOG examination. USMLE Step 3 scores were available for 10 of these residents. Linear regression was used to analyze the data.
Results: The correlation coefficient comparing weekly quiz scores to CREOG exam scores (r=0.41, p=0.141) was lower than the correlation coefficient comparing USMLE Step 3 scores to CREOG exam scores (r=0.88, p<0.001). A weekly quiz score over 83% or a USMLE Step 3 score over 203 each have a 95% positive predictive value for achieving a CREOG exam score over 185.
Conclusion: Compared with USMLE Step 3 performance, weekly reading quiz performance is less highly correlated with CREOG examination scores. However, threshold scores can be established on each to predict low performance on the CREOG examination. These findings require replication with a new cohort of residents to further assess their validity.
