Resident Obstetric Ultrasound Performance. Can We Improve the Quality?

2012 ASL Abstract
Objective:
To evaluate the effect of a tutorial on resident ultrasound (US) report completion rates and knowledge.
Study Design: Prospective, IRB-approved, intervention trial comparing resident (N=20) US report completion rates before and after a 1 hour tutorial on the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) required elements of an adequate obstetric US study. The secondary outcome was resident pre- and post-tutorial test performance. Data were analyzed by Chi square, Fisher exact test or paired T-test.

Conclusion: Resident exposure to a tutorial on the AIUM criteria that comprise an adequate obstetric US study did not improve the US report completion rate but favorably impacted immediate and 3-month test scores. The tutorial also improved biophysical profile knowledge but only temporarily.
