Nutrition in Medicine: Effectiveness of a Web-based Curriculum for OBGYN Residents & Fellows

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and acceptability of a web-based nutrition education curriculum for OBGYN residents and MFM fellows.
STUDY DESIGN: Surveys before and 2 months after review of a web-based nutrition curriculum were used to estimate the modules’ effectiveness in improving nutritional practices and confidence in counseling with obstetrical and gynecologic patients.
RESULTS: 29 residents and 7 Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellows answered the initial survey. Prior to the curriculum, 60% of housestaff addressed nutritional issues during prenatal care while only 14.3% addressed nutritional issues during gynecologic visits. Comparisons will be made between genders and level of training to assess whether there has been an incorporation of nutritional counseling in practice. The potential impact of this educational effort is greatest for gynecologic patients Change in confidence regarding nutrition counseling and obesity-related issues will be reported.
CONCLUSION: Web-based curriculum did/did not improve clinical practice related to nutritional issues skills of OBGYN residents.
