Empowering the new learner: a framework for difficult scenarios

Objective/ Background: We start from the acknowledgement that change is needed. The culture of medicine is fraught with racism, misogyny, and ableism. We reject these structures and seek the practice of medicine that respects the dignity of the patient and the physician. As medical educators, we are in the privileged position of shaping conscious change through how and what we teach. Being a physician is demanding, and we cannot fail to prepare students for this demanding profession. Simultaneously, prioritizing mental health is paramount given the known risk of suicide among students, trainees, and physicians. Medical educators have a responsibility to navigate complex scenarios with compassion and inclusivity while also challenging students in positive ways that yield growth. The objective of this workshop is to promote conversation about the complexities of learner and educator perspectives on integrating academic demands, patient care, and personal health. We will provide a framework that promotes comprehensive considerations that will be used as participants work through difficult scenarios.
