Purpose: This study aims to show how the implementation of a faculty development program about Milestones 2.0 and an evaluation app, impacts the evaluation completion rate.
Background: The ACGME Milestones are used to track resident competency and performance. Following all resident rotations, faculty are assigned evaluations based on these milestones. Getting faculty to complete these evaluations can be challenging, leading to limited data for residents and the clinical competency committee to use when determining milestone levels. Studies have shown improved faculty evaluation response rates when using web-based online platforms. With the use of smart phones, faculty have the ability to complete evaluations from their phones for easy real time evaluation.
Methods: We will track the completion rate of evaluations before and after the implementation of a faculty development session to teach faculty about the new Milestones and how to use the New Innovations phone app. We will compare the evaluation completion rates from 2015-2020 to the completion rates for 2022, following the faculty development program.
Results: The total number of faculty evaluations sent from 2015-2020 was 3917, with 2191 completed (55.9%). Since the faculty development program in 2022, 52 evaluations were sent, and 43 were completed (82.7%), which was statistically significant (p < 0.05).
Discussions: Teaching faculty about ACGME milestones and how to use phone based evaluations has been shown to improve the rate of evaluation completion by faculty. The use of faculty development programming with physician educators may improve engagement of more faculty in the feedback and evaluation process for resident education.
