Objective: Students, faculty and administrators have an increasing need for usable technology to make the most of limited medical education resources, but they are not always included in decisions about the IT purchases and policies that affect them the most.
Methods: Led by two physician programmers, this session will help participants answer the question, \"Build, buy, or hack?\" for their most pressing software need. Participants will discuss the medical education problem space and survey some of the generic and domain-specific software packages that dominate medical education, such as Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace, myTIPreport, Blackboard, and others. The presenters will share their experience building and hacking solutions to specific medical education problems.
Results: Participants will generate a list of real problems they face and work together to identify resource-sensitive solutions to those problems using a build, buy, or hack approach.
Conclusion/ Discussion: Each participant will leave with a strategy to build, buy or hack a solution to one of their most pressing IT problems. Tips for getting started will be shared in an online education module that will be generated during the session.
