When Wards Are Off-Limits: Supplementing OB education with virtual patient-student pairings during COVID
Objective: COVID-19 has changed the antepartum period and birthing experiences of patients in hospitals nationwide, from restrictions around outside visitors to reduced face-to-face interactions with providers. The pandemic also changed medical students\' clinical responsibilities and limited their exposure to obstetric patients. Medical Students Offering Maternal Support (MOMS), an organization started in 2014 to support pregnant patients and supplement OBGYN education through patient-student pairings, provided an existing framework to address these challenges. Virtually pairing patients on the antepartum floor with medical students offers a unique educational opportunity to support patients during a potentially isolating time and can be implemented at other institutions.
Workshop Agenda: Participants will discuss best practices, potential pitfalls, and applying narrative medicine.
