Recharge Your Problem Solving by Using Design Thinking to Address Your Medical Education Challenges

Objective: Design thinking is gaining traction as a process and approach for creative problem solving. There is a need for more creative solutions to address challenges in graduate medical education.

Workshop Agenda: The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the concepts of design thinking to participants and have them apply it to pertinent challenge areas in medical education, such as remote learning and enhancing diversity and inclusion. The hidden agenda is for participants to become comfortable with ‘failing fast’.

Interactive Component:
The entire workshop will be interactive and participants will work with sticky notes and large posters.
•  The first 10 minutes will be spent setting the agenda and participants will share expectations and work through an integrated ice breaker that will lead to the formation of groups.
•  Afterwards, each group will be given 20 minutes to identify or refine a challenge area in medical education and work through a theory of change.
•  Then, they will share back to the larger group over 10 minutes.
•  The following 20 minutes will be spent on ideation and (if groups have time) initial prototyping of one or more ideas.
•  They will then share back to the larger group over 15 minutes. The final moments will be spent reflecting on the initial workshop expectations.

Take Home Product: By the end of the workshop, participants will be familiar with design thinking, be able to think through a theory of change and develop approaches to ideation and prototyping while becoming comfortable with failing fast and well.
