Put Me In, Coach: Health coaching as a tool for better medicine

Workshop Presented as Roundtable:
Learning Objective: Health coaching is a powerful intervention that can improve health
care on multiple levels. In this short, interactive workshop, basic health coaching skills will be
introduced in a practical, easy to implement way that can improve provider and patient health.
Background: The evolution of medical school curricula away from fact mastery and toward tangible
skills to improve provider interactions and patient care has allowed many new innovations. Health
Coaching training has emerged as a tool that supports self- and patient care, and the basic skills can be
mastered in a short training session.
Description of session: This workshop will introduce basic health coaching theory, including clarifying
vision for change, elaboration of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timebound),
and essential motivational communication strategies. Learners will then practice interviewing
techniques and SMART goal setting in triads, with opportunities for post-conference goal monitoring.
Participants will leave with at least one personal SMART goal and followup plan, as well as interview
techniques to implement in personal and professional interactions.
