Using trigger videos to expand the student perspective of the clinical learning environment. Does it improve the student’s perceived experience?
Objective: To determine whether showing trigger videos during orientation, which
reflect different viewpoints, improves the subjective student clerkship experience
Background: Recurring themes in the student feedback about the learning environment were addressed
in trigger videos. These videos were shown in orientation and used to prompt learner reflection and
discussion about the viewpoints of those in the scenario: attending, resident, nurses, the patient and the
medical students. End of clerkship evaluations were analyzed before and after the use of these videos to
see if there was an impact on student ratings of the learning environment and comments about their
experience. Complaints declined in clerkship evaluations after these videos were viewed at orientation.
Workshop agenda:
Discuss common themes which arise in clerkship evaluations. Describe the creation and content of our
videos. Explain our key word analysis of pre and post findings.
Interactive component: Individual groups will identify common student complaints that they find in their
own end of clerkship evaluations. These groups will brainstorm and role-play scripts which present a
clinical situation that can be seen from different viewpoints. The groups will discuss ways to present
their scenarios to students, and discuss whether this may be an effective way to alter student
perceptions of the unique learning environments encountered in ObGyn clerkships.
Take home product: Rough outlines of various scenarios that can be used to create videos that could
apply to clerkships at their home institutions.
