Resident Abortion Care Training and Satisfaction: Results from the 2020 CREOG Exam Survey
Purpose: To assess residency program training in abortion care as required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and resident satisfaction with that training.
Background: Resident training opportunities in abortion care are highly variable. Resident satisfaction is an important metric for standardizing training. Prior data on implementation of the ACGME resident requirement for training in abortion care has been limited by ascertainment bias and low response rates.
Methods: Residents completed an anonymous, voluntary, electronic survey prior to the 2020 Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) in-training examination. The survey asked about access to abortion care training within the residency program, satisfaction with that training and demographic data.
Results: A total of 5,427 residents of a possible 5582 (97.2%) completed the survey, divided approximately equally by training year. Sixty-two percent described their program’s abortion training as routine, 30% as optional, and 8% as not available. Sixty-five percent were satisfied with their program’s abortion training, 24% were neutral and 11% were not satisfied. Dissatisfaction was 2% at programs with routine training, 17% at programs with optional training, and 51% at programs with no training (p< 0.00).
Discussions: While the majority of Obstetrics and Gynecology residency programs are providing abortion care training, 8% of residents report no training is available at their program, which would be in violation of the ACGME requirement. Resident satisfaction with abortion care training correlated with availability. Residency programs should prioritize abortion training and support residents’ training needs.
