Navigating Challenges in the Clinical Learning Environment on the OBGYN Clerkship

bjective/ Background: The OBGYN rotation is a unique opportunity for medical students to be part of a multidisciplinary team. However, the potential for intense, sensitive, or dynamic patient interactions can leave students feeling unprepared. The lecture\'s aim is to prepare students for learning in the clinical environment of OBGYN.

Methods: The aim is to improve student readiness and expectations for the perioperative environment during their clerkship experience by dissecting tense, challenging, dynamic, and unique scenarios commonly encountered in the perioperative environment. The overall goal of this workshop is to reduce medical student mistreatment by improving resources for supporting students and empowering students to advocate for their learning.

Results: Prior to this workshop, there were 6 and 8 reports of student mistreatment in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Since implementation in Fall 2021, there have been 2 reports per year with a downward trend. Additionally, we collected 87 student surveys. Using inductive thematic analysis, three readers independently reviewed student surveys to identify three common themes participants took away from the session including normalizing uncertainty, the importance of being a proactive learner, and the value of a debrief.
