Development of a Self-Directed Curriculum for Outpatient GYN
Problem: Due to the importance
of logging surgical cases while in residency, many OBGYN residents graduate
with a deficit in their outpatient gynecology education. Many graduates cite
outpatient gynecology as a deficit in their residency training. In addition,
the majority of OBGYN resident rotations are inpatient rotations. Outpatient
cases and office procedures are often not tracked and the framework of
residency challenges the ability for continuity of outpatient care. We sought
to improve outpatient gynecology education by instituting a new outpatient
rotation with a self-directed learning curriculum to cover a variety of
outpatient gynecology topics.
Intervention: Our OBGYN program instituted a new outpatient rotation in the
second year of residency and with it a coordinated curriculum that encouraged
self-directed learning. This multi-media curriculum that included reading from
a variety of online and text sources, listening (podcasts) and viewing (youtube
videos) appealed to different educational styles and weekly quizzes helped
prepare for board examinations as well as provided a framework for continued
study.
Outcome/Lessons Learned:
Over the curriculum which spanned an 8 week rotation, residents demonstrated an
improvement in their weekly quiz scores. A pre- and post- test demonstrated
significant improvement in both second and third year residents. In addition,
residents qualitatively described that having a list of topics presented in a
variety of ways helped them to choose learning techniques that worked best on
an individual level. In addition, a variety of resources were presented that
residents used after the rotation. The
curriculum was well received by residents. They identified that areas of
improvement would be to use institutional recorded lectures for certain topics.
