Objectively Promoting the Medical Educator Using Impact and Competencies

Objective: The tripartite mission of academic medicine – biomedical research, medical education, patient care – often favors research and clinical productivity. Our objective is to demonstrate use of educator competency metrics to display impact, highlight achievements, and strengthen educator portfolios for faculty seeking promotion and new leadership positions. Go beyond the standard portfolio and learn how to strategize and plan for your promotion and academic advancement!

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

 • Use proposed educator competency metrics to demonstrate impact for the medical educator seeking promotion and new leadership positions

 • Use their own CV to demonstrate their impact as an educator across multiple educator competency domains

 • Use new impact strategies to plan for promotion and advancement

Methods: This interactive workshop will demonstrate use of educator competency metrics to display impact, highlight achievements, and strengthen educator portfolios for faculty seeking promotion and new leadership positions.  The facilitators will share examples of published and institutional educator competencies and metric toolboxes, how to utilize a brief impact statement, and other promotion tools that highlight educator impact.    Through a combination of small and large group activities, participants will utilize their CV and a tool to demonstrate the impact of their educational efforts, innovations, and achievements.

Results: Frameworks for demonstrating impact as a medical educator

 Strategies for advancement

Tools to highlight accomplishments in support of academic promotion

Conclusion/ Discussion: Through a combination of small and large group activities, participants will utilize their CV and a tool to demonstrate the impact of their educational efforts, innovations, and achievements.
