Escaping the Powerpoint Quicksand: Engaging Your Faculty in Interactive Teaching Modalities

Workshop APGO Fac Dev Seminar
Précis: Tired of the same old Powerpoint presentations? Many of our learners are! At this workshop
participants will be introduced to new presentation modalities to innovate their lectures and leave with
a ToolKit to share with educators at their home institutions.
Workshop Text: Objective/Background: In order to stimulate and engage our new generation of
learners, we have incorporated several innovative teaching strategies to replace or modify more
traditional presentation formats. While our core group of faculty educators is familiar with these
methods, we have found that additional faculty invited to lecture tend to utilize more traditional slide
presentations. This is an area for potential improvement where in teaching the teachers can yield more
effective and exciting didactics for our learners. In this workshop, our goal is to create a toolkit of
innovative lecture techniques that participants can bring back to their home institutions to meet this
need. Workshop Agenda: This session will begin with an overview and demonstration of innovative
presentation techniques used at our institution. In following we will survey the audience for new lecture
formats and methods used at other institutions. Interactive Component: Participants will be divided into
small groups and be provided with a previously used Powerpoint presentation. Each group will choose a
new presentation technique to redesign the Powerpoint into a new and improved presentation. Small
groups will then reconvene for a large group debriefing to share their experience and new presentation.
Take Home Product: Participants will leave with a ToolKit of new presentation strategies to bring back to
share with educators at their home institutions.
