Objective/ Background: Professionalism is a fundamental component in the education, practice, and development of physicians. However, historical professionalism standards often conflict with developing priorities in healthcare, including burnout prevention, diversity and inclusion, and patient expectations.
Methods: We will discuss where current professionalism definitions started, how historical standards pose challenges for students and trainees, and ways to modulate our views of professionalism to improve inclusivity while maintaining safe and compassionate patient care.
Results: A handout with steps to address professionalism concerns will be reviewed during the session.
Conclusion/ Discussion: The goal of this session is to provide medical educators with tools to assess the professionalism of students and trainees to improve cultural competency and equality, patient-physician trust, and physician well-being.
