Trauma-Informed Care In Sexual And Reproductive Health – A Curriculum Development Project

Objective: To develop a curriculum in trauma-informed care (TIC) for learners and clinicians in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in order to provide the foundational knowledge, attitudinal orientation, and skills necessary to provide high-quality, trauma-informed clinical care.

Methods: Using the Kern’s Six-Step Curriculum Development model, we are creating our curriculum using a justice-informed, transdisciplinary, community-engaged process to develop objectives, educational strategies, and curriculum content. We have recruited five community scholar experts with lived and/or professional experiences in trauma and TIC, as well as two SRH educators with expertise in TIC.

Results: Aims and learning objectives for the overall course have been developed through our targeted needs assessment (Phase 1-3 of Kern’s Six-Step). We have drafted the structure of the course and module-specific course objectives. The course modules cover trauma epidemiology, best practices in TIC, providing TIC in pelvic care, abortion, birthing care, and providing trauma informed SRH care for those who have experienced racial trauma, those who use substances, those who are trans or gender diverse, those with high weight, and those with disability.  We will next generate scripts for the individual modules and pilot the modules among 5 medical students and 5 OBGYN residents. Their feedback will be incorporated into the final course.

Conclusion: Our final curricular content will be available in video modules, external resource links, faculty guide for curriculum facilitation, and case studies for further reflection of curricular concepts. These videos will be hosted on the Innovating Education website, and will be incorporated into the OBGYN clerkship.
