Needs Assessment of Menopause Education in U.S. OBGYN Residency Training Programs
Objective: U.S. ObGyn trainees
perceive that they have limited knowledge of menopausal medicine1. The purpose
of this study is to assess the variance of menopause education, educational
resources, and the needs of ObGyn residency programs by conducting a national
survey of program directors (PDs).
Methods:An IRB approved web-based
Qualtrics survey was approved and distributed electronically between May and
August 2022 to 145 U.S. ObGyn residency PDs. Survey consisted of 15 questions.
Descriptive statistics were performed.
Results: The survey was completed by 99 PDs (68.3%). Out of all programs, 29
(29.3%) reported trainees having dedicated time assigned to a menopause clinic
and only 31.3% (31/99) have a menopause curriculum as part of their residency
program.Of the programs with a
menopause curriculum, 96.8% (30/31) reported using lectures, 77.4% (24/31) used
assigned readings, and 74.2% (23/31) had either dedicated menopause clinics or
other clinics with a high volume of menopause patients.Eighty-three PDs (83.8%) agreed or strongly
agreed that their program needs more menopause educational resources and 92 PDs
(92.9%) stated they would utilize standardized training materials in a
menopause curriculum.89.7% (89/99) of
PDs reported they were likely or very likely to use self-paced menopause
modules that include performance feedback if available.
Conclusion:The data from the needs
assessment questionnaire reveals that menopause education and resources vary
across U.S. ObGyn residency programs. Most PDs expressed a desire for more educational resources and
standardized training materials and would prefer to access an online menopause
curriculum on the CREOG website.
