Use of a Checklist to Improve Medical Student Knowledge of Pelvic Anatomy: A Pilot Study
Precis: Medical students enter the OBGYN clerkship with rudimentary pelvic anatomy knowledge. Engaging students while teaching pelvic anatomy during laparoscopic surgery is challenging. This study aims to show that an anatomy checklist increases student engagement and anatomy knowledge.
Purpose: To evaluate if a pelvic anatomy checklist will improve medical student knowledge
Background: Third-year medical students (MS3) enter their OBGYN clerkship with rudimentary pelvic anatomy knowledge. An anatomy checklist may provide a self-directed learning method that allows more student engagement.
Methods: MS3s were voluntarily enrolled in this prospective longitudinal study. They completed a baseline basic (Q1) and advanced quiz (Q2) at the rotation start and offered the checklist to use during the rotation. They completed both quizzes at the rotation end. Students were queried on feedback about the checklist.
Results: 24% (13/54) of students participated. Students who did not score 100% on baseline Q1 improved on post-clerkship Q1. 60% (6/10) of students improved their scores on the Q2, while 20% (2/10 ) of students showed no improvement on the baseline and post-clerkship Q2.
Seven students used the checklist <50% of the time during rotation (Group-A), while 5 students used it >50% (Group-B). In Group-A, 71% (5/7) improved their Q1 scores, while 60% (3/5) in Group B improved their Q1 scores. 57% (4/7) of Group-A students improved their Q2 score, while 60% (3/5) Group-B students improved their Q2 scores. Statistical comparison was not completed due to small sample size. 62% (8/13) felt the checklist helped answer anatomy questions correctly. 69% (9/13) felt the checklist offered a more proactive learning approach.
Discussion: An anatomy checklist can be a self-directed tool for students during their OBGYN clerkship. Most students improved their basic pelvic anatomy knowledge. Use of the checklist led to a more engaging learning experience.
