Purpose: To evaluate faculty’s interest in coaching training and developing coaching programs in GME after attending a two-hour pilot coaching workshop, and to identify potential challenges and opportunities for future coaching training sessions.
Background: There is growing interest in developing coaching programs to better support learners’ during the transition to and during residency. However, little is known about whether faculty would be interested in participating in coaching training in GME.
Methods: A two-hour coaching training was presented virtually to OBGYN faculty. Immediate post-training evaluation queried participants on the knowledge gained in the coaching session, comfort with coaching skills, anticipated applications of skills and possible barriers in implementation.
Results: Of the participants, 23/32 (72%) completed the survey. The majority were program directors (14/23, (61%) and from university-based programs (16/23, 70%). Nearly all [22/23, (96%)] were interested in more training, and respondents reported an increased interest in academic coaching, gaining confidence in their coaching skills, and improving their comfort in asking learners questions to arrive at their own answers. When asked about applying coaching in their program, participants planned to introduce specific coaching tools taught and to implement this within the current structure of their program. Time for coaching, buy-in from participants or the department, and identifying the right people to be coaches were the top barriers noted.
Discussions: A brief, virtual coaching intervention increased faculty interest in coaching training and implementing coaching programs in GME. Intentional planning will need to address participants’ concerns regarding time and buy-in from leadership.
