Objective: We cultivated a student-led forum, Interactive Grand Rounds, where students present highly engaging presentations. Grand Rounds have been a traditional academic institution amongst medical education generally known for special interest topics. With undergraduate medical education in a constant state of flux, changes in learning and the advancement of technology necessitated a need for revamping Grand Round ideology. This unprecedented year unmasked a true need for video conferencing technology to not only continue this educational experience but even expand upon it by disrupting our traditional ways.
Methods: In this interactive workshop, we will discuss potential subject topics and what resources have been utilized for a more engaging presentation. In small groups, participants will identify appropriate subtopics for student-led research that could be presented. Topics include clinical sciences, basic sciences, and humanities, including health inequities, public policy, and harm reduction. Also, we will interactively demonstrate resources used for presentation enhancement, including but not limited to features of Zoom, the utility of QR codes, and audience engagement, including polls, digital doodling.
Results: Participants will simulate as learners in an Interactive Grand Rounds while meta-learning the very techniques, enhancements, and resources utilized within its presentation. Participants will receive a presentation rubric, a post-presentation survey, a set of starter topics/cases, and a list of interactive resources used for presentation enhancement.
Conclusion/ Discussion: One of the advocated ways to eliminate systemic racism is having open discussions to address the past wrongdoings and proposed corrections for the future. Grand Rounds has the ability to be tailored as a forum to discuss such topics as ethics and humanities in healthcare and learning to tackle disparities from a different standpoint. Moreover, any discussion of a medical topic included in Grand Rounds should/could include discussion of demographics and risk factors i.e. race, socioeconomic, et al.
