Objective: The AAMC Medical School Graduation Questionnaire consistently rates Ob/Gyn residents the least effective teachers of all the core clerkships. To change the teaching culture within our own residency the Academy of Resident Educators was created. This resident-led initiative aims to foster the growth of residents as clinician-educators by providing opportunities in direct instruction of medical students, educational leadership, and professional development.
Methods: Rocket Fuel (15 minutes): The interactive session will begin with a review of Ob/Gyn specific resident-as-teacher programs in the literature. Poll Everywhere will be used to identify impediments to resident teaching
Results: Moonshot (35 minutes): We will present the Academy of Resident Educators, beginning with the mission statement and followed by a brief description of the process of creating and implementing the program. Large group discussion will follow with volunteers providing critiques of the presented curriculum and exploring opportunities and barriers to developing similar programs at their home institutions.
Conclusion/ Discussion: Safe Landing (25 minutes): Small group discussion will follow regarding other innovative methods that can be used to encourage residents as teachers. A worksheet will be used so participants can leave with a plan for steps they would take to implement a similar program at their own institution.
