Objective: Interprofessional education (IPE) is endorsed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) as an important part of advancing health education. Collaborative practice is shown to improve population health outcomes and management, but the most impactful shared educational models are yet to be defined. Without novel IPE models, providers\' work will continue in silos.
This workshop introduces participants to strategies to integrate students into a new, interprofessional team. Participants will partake in team building strategies in small and large group discussions, and develop approaches to build interprofessional team opportunities in Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN) clerkships.
Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Describe the key dimensions of effective teams
• Apply strategies to integrate students into new, interprofessional teams
• Propose opportunities to promote interprofessional learning and teaming among students in OBGYN
Methods: Workshop Agenda/Interactive component:
1. Define the key dimensions of effective teams (10 min)
2. Build strategies, using the key dimensions, to incorporate students into teams, in small groups (20 min)
3. Large group discussion: considering barriers and opportunities to foster interprofessional learning and teaming with medical students in OBGYN at participants’ home institutions (20 min)
4. Discuss and propose concrete ways to incorporate interprofessional learning at participants’ home institutions (20 min)
5. Wrap-up/Takeaways (5 min)
Results: Participants will receive a toolkit with rubric and resources to:
1. Develop skills in effective interprofessional team building
2. Create IPE opportunities for OBGYN students at home institutions.
Conclusion/ Discussion: Interprofessional education includes trainees from across professions, from varied backgrounds and cultures. A goal of this session is to teach skills that can be employed to develop a diverse community of learning across professions. Exposure to health professionals across different domains helps medical students to understand personal and educational objectives that may be different from their own, to better prepare students to positively impact patient care and the learning environment in practice.
