Curricular Innovation for the Post 2020 Clerkship: It IS Rocket Science!

Objective: This interactive workshop will develop clerkship didactics designed to meet the challenges of the post-2020 clerkship and for use with all learning styles in all learning environments.

Methods: There is a critical need for curricular innovation as students return to the clinical setting in the midst of the ongoing dual crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and of systemic racism and healthcare inequity.   We will describe the development of a learner-centered case-based curriculum designed to adapt to individual learning styles and differing learning environments.  Participants will discuss post-COVID curricular challenges and ways they have met those challenges.  Through shared experiences, participants will develop best practices for use in their clerkships.

Results: Workshop agenda:

Introduction of common curricular challenges in the post-2020 clerkship.  (10 minutes)

Break-out groups to discuss post-2020 challenges that have impacted the learning environment and share with larger group. (20 minutes- interactive)

Leaders will describe development of a case-based, flipped classroom curriculum.  The curriculum is designed to adapt to differing learning styles with access to podcasts, practice bulletins, textbooks and pre-recorded lectures and different learning environments as it can be used for face-to-face didactics, virtual learning, or self-study.  We will describe how this curriculum addresses health systems sciences and healthcare inequities and how it is used at three different institutions. (20 minutes)

Participants will return to break-out groups to discuss how the adaptation of this curriculum to address challenges in their clerkships and present back to the larger group. (20 minutes- interactive)

Wrap-up and collection of information from all groups for subsequent distribution. (5 minutes)

Conclusion/ Discussion: Participants will get access to the curriculum described in the session as a hand out and electronically.  After the workshop, participants will receive collated information from brainstorming performed during the session.

The adaptability of this curriculum with resources for different learning styles and learning environments works to promote equity by reaching all learners where they are.  Additionally, modules regarding health systems sciences and healthcare inequities with appropriate resources are integrated throughout the curriculum.
