An Innovative Approach to Menopause Management Education for OBGYN Residents

Purpose: To improve residency training in menopause management utilizing a novel approach

 

Background: Gynecologists provide significant care to perimenopausal and menopausal women. However, lack of formal menopause education during residency training creates a gap in provider knowledge and comfort in managing this specific patient population. An experiential, competitive, team-based learning experience for residents was created at a large county teaching hospital to increase understanding in menopause management and participation in quality improvement efforts.

 

Methods: A half-day educational workshop with a flipped classroom component was created to educate residents on clinical content regarding menopause. Residents then were divided into three teams and used design thinking instructions to design a clinical tool targeted for providers. The resident designed tools were then piloted and evaluated by the faculty. The winning tool would be disseminated to the hospital providers. Pre- and post-workshop surveys were used to evaluate knowledge and comfort in menopause management.

 

Results: Eighteen residents participated in the training, and fourteen residents created a tool. Residents reported they were moderately or very confident in their knowledge of medical treatment for menopause after the workshop (29% vs. 44%) and managing the physiology of menopause symptoms (38% vs. 72%). The winning tool consisted of a concise clinical education presentation on menopause management and treatment, and was disseminated to providers at the hospital.

 

Discussions: With the implementation of a team-based education workshop and the creation of a competitive learning tool, residents demonstrated an increased understanding in menopause management. Further investigations into changes in referrals patterns is ongoing.
