YoUV Protection: Negotiating for Personal and Professional Success!

Objective: Good negotiation skills are associated with greater career longevity, less burnout and fewer disparities in leadership and pay. Women negotiate less frequently and set lower negotiation goals than their male counterparts. Medical educators in OBGYN are overwhelmingly female which may impact not only the medical educators but also the educational programs they lead. As OBGYNs, we care for and advocate for women daily but we are not nearly as good at advocating for ourselves. One reason women may not negotiate as frequently is because they do not have the tools and confidence to be effective negotiators. Participants in this session will learn about the importance of negotiation for their personal and professional development, will better understand their personal negotiating tendencies, and will develop and practice their negotiation skills.

Workshop Agenda: The workshop will start with an introduction to negotiation and its importance. Participants will then complete a validated negotiation self-assessment.  The workshop will detail step-by-step plans for how to decide when and how to conduct a successful negotiation. Participants will break into groups and practice negotiation skills with one another. They will choose real life topics they would like to negotiate for and practice negotiating for their own specific goals.

Interactive Component: Negotiation self-assessment, mock negotiation for participants to pair up and practice.

Take Home Product: A handout with a framework of how to plan for and execute an effective negotiation.
