The Art of Feedback: Abandoning “You are Doing Great” and Moving to “This is What You can Improve”

Objective: Although there is a lot of interest among faculty in how to give effective feedback, there is a paucity of literature on this topic. Giving learners specific feedback and meaningful narrative evaluations will empower learner focus on personal growth. This workshop will focus on strategies to give learners concrete feedback and discuss elements that make narrative evaluations meaningful:
•  Explain the importance of providing concrete feedback
•  Identify possible barriers to giving effective feedback and meaningful narrative evaluations
•  Describe key elements to write meaningful narrative evaluation.
•  Identify possible barriers to giving effective feedback and meaningful narrative evaluations
•  Describe key elements to write meaningful narrative evaluations
 
Workshop Agenda:

•  Pre-session online assessment and introduction: 10 minutes
•  Discussion: Tools to evaluate feedback and narrative evaluations – 5 minutes
°    Activity 1:  Self-Reflection Activity.  How well do you give feedback or write narrative evaluations?- 5 minutes
•  Discussion: Importance of giving concrete feedback – 10 minutes
°    Activity 2:  Snowball Activity.  Discuss facilitators and barriers to giving effective feedback – 10 minutes
•  Discussion: The differences between feedback and evaluation – 10 minutes
°    Activity 3: Roleplay giving feedback and writing narrative evaluations using the strategies discussed - 10 minutes
•  Post-workshop online quiz: 5 minutes
•  Whole group debrief/discussion/wrap-up – 10 minutes
 
Interactive Component: Using an interactive app a pre and post-session assessment will be performed, deidentified and shared with the group. Three interactive components including self-reflection, Snowball Activity and Roleplaying will be included.
 
Take Home Product:
The toolkit will include a survey to evaluate perception of feedback, step by step guide to feedback and writing a proper narrative evaluation.
