Power Up to Keep Going and Going: How to Develop Faculty for Career Advising
Objective: Career advising programs vary in their structure and types of faculty involvement. Often, clerkship directors, by default, take on the role of specialty career advisors, and with little to no formal faculty development. With less than 50% of graduating MS4s being satisfied with the various resources that comprise career advising (AAMC GQ, 2019), the question remains as to what comprises an effective career advising program and how do faculty develop expertise in this area.
Workshop Agenda: In this interactive workshop, we will review components of career advising services and how to create a career advising program that has opportunities for faculty development and continued growth to meet the needs of students with respect to residency application.
Interactive Component: Attendees will interact in small groups where they will review the components of their existing OB/GYN advising programs and how current faculty in their programs receive training to be career advisors. They will then discuss what elements are missing in their programs and barriers to faculty development. Finally, they will discuss what methods can be used to assess the strengths of advising programs. Authors will then present their respective institutions advising programs.
Take Home Product: Participants will leave with a developed toolkit of resources for faculty development for building and assessing stronger career advising programs.
