Electric slide Cognitive Bias into the OB/Gyn Clerkship

Objective: Current curriculum trends regarding Health System\'s science involve teaching patient safety.  The joint commission advisory #18 on Safety and Quality Issues specifically addresses Cognitive Bias (Anchoring bias, Availability bias etc.) in Health Care.  Despite recognition of the importance of patient safety and a specific Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA 13) that pertains to the core ability to identify system failures and contribute to a culture of safety and improvement, there is little formal training for OB/GYN medical students in the recognition of cognitive bias.

Workshop Agenda:
In this interactive workshop, we will review the prior research and our respective experiences specific to teaching Cognitive Bias in the Clerkship curriculum.  Our attention will then turn broadly to techniques that engage students to understand and identify cognitive bias in the clinical environment.

Interactive Component:
Attendee\'s will interact in small groups where they will define Cognitive bias, and how Cognitive bias awareness is addressed with their institution\'s curriculum.   Participants will develop methods of teaching awareness of cognitive bias to students.  The attendees will then be provided with some examples of cognitive bias awareness curriculum and asked to work as groups to see how each idea could be implemented at their home institution.

Take Home Product:
Participants will leave with a developed toolkit of resources for increasing medical student awareness of cognitive bias.
