Bringing Student Developed QI Projects Into Closer View during the Third Year Clerkship
Objective/Background: The Institute of Medicine defines quality in health care in domains including efficiency, effectiveness, equity, patient centeredness, safety and timeliness. Despite recognition of the importance of these domains and a specific Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA 13) that pertains to the core ability to identify system failures and contribute to a culture of safety and improvement, there is little formal training for medical students in quality improvement in healthcare.
Workshop Agenda: In this interactive workshop, we will review the prior research specific to health system science and QI projects in the medical school curriculum. Interactive component: Examples of QI projects will be provided to small groups and each group will
1) discuss methods for implementing the project into the clerkship curriculum,
2) determine potential barriers as well as methods for overcoming them,
3) develop methods for evaluation and providing feedback for the projects. Authors will then present the methods used for implementing the student designed QI projects from their respective institutions as well as examples of these projects.
Take Home Product: Participants will leave with a developed toolkit of resources for implementing QI projects in their clerkships.
