Background: Medical education focuses on providing trainees with the medical
knowledge and skills to become competent physicians.. Modern medicine, however, demands
physicians be excellent clinicians, educators and leaders: taking care of patients and managing
interdisciplinary teams in complex systems. While programs increasingly focus on teaching skills,
leadership skills are frequently taught less intentionally through “osmosis” using role modeling. As
physicians are increasingly required to manage interdisciplinary teams, they are obligated to acquire this
expertise, making robust training in leadership crucial for success.
Workshop Agenda:
During this interactive workshop, participants will explore physicians as leaders and compare other industries\' approaches to leadership development in medical education through creative icebreakers (10
min). Participants will engage in group reflection to define leadership goals (10 min). Participants will
then work collaboratively to design a leadership pathway for trainees in their institution: setting
tone/expectations (10 min), developing communication and management skills with directed practice
(30 min), and utilizing reflection/feedback (10 min).
Interactive component:
Participants will engage in innovative and creative activities using games and multimedia tools to
explore notions of leadership in medicine. Participants will then work in teams to create models for
creatively incorporating leadership training into their home institutions.
Take Home Product: Participants will receive a leadership tool kit to create and implement leadership
curricula in their home institution. Additionally, through creative exercises and reflection, they will leave
empowered with knowledge and inspiration to lead the wave of change when they return.
