Grading Your Grading

Assigning grades and evaluating students is one of the more difficult duties that the
clerkship director must perform. While there is much more to an individual student than their clerkship
grade, students hope to be assessed accurately and graded fairly. There are many data points that can
be used to evaluate a student’s clinical performance and medical knowledge, however, all have their
limitations and some are not feasible for all rotations and clinical sites.
This workshop will offer an assessment of the tools and materials that can be used to provide students
with accurate, fair and timely grades. We will begin our conference by asking the group to share the
various data points used to assess their students. We will then review with the group the benefits and
limitations of the various possible areas of student evaluation. After this we will delve into the national
data that is available on clerkship grading and assessment, as well as the recommendations on student
evaluation from leading national academic organizations. We will conclude the conference with a
debate-style discussion where small groups will work on presenting one side of several arguments
related to student grading and evaluation.
Participants will leave this session with a list of online resources that can be used to collect, aggregate
and share evaluations of students’ clinical performance and prepare this information for grading.
Everyone will fell ready to give themselves an A+ in grading and evaluation of their clerkship students.
