Annual Facial for your Clerkship: Cleaning up the Blemishes to Create a Beautiful Clerkship

Workshop Presented as Roundtable:
The Ob/Gyn clerkship can be intimidating, or a fun and fantastic experience. An annual clerkship review
incorporates evaluations and objective data to correct common clerkship blemishes such as the learning
environment, lack of faculty continuity, limited hands-on experience, and varied clinical settings. Annual
reviews identify successes and challenges; through reflection, we can improve the clerkship experience.
Workshop Agenda, Including Interactive Component:
We will begin with a “look in the mirror”, reviewing common blemishes that make students rank
clerkships unfavorably. We will review data elements that can be used to help shape our clerkships,
such as student and faculty evaluations, test scores, and clinical experiences. We will share example
formats for annual clerkship reviews, including ideas for solutions (25 minutes).
“Chemical peel”: In collaborative small groups, participants will discuss and create individual charts
listing the types of clerkship data they are currently collecting, and how it can be useful in an annual
clerkship review (20 min).
“Cucumber soak”: Participants will share obstacles/solutions that have worked at their institutions.
They will add to their charts additional types of data or feedback they can collect. Groups will be
encouraged to examine each institution’s blemishes and troubleshoot next steps to overcome these.
(30 minutes).
Take Home Product:
Participants will return to their institutions with a chart of currently collected data on the clerkship,
additional data that could be useful if collected, and common pitfalls and solutions. This will serve as
the foundation for beginning an annual clerkship review program.
