Vitamins A, B, C, D, or E: Enrich Your MCQs!

Objective/ Background:
Although educators are generally clear about what content is important and what knowledge
needs assessment, it can be a challenge to construct questions that reliably assess the learner. Since the
NBME is required to demonstrate progression through their medical education, students seek
experience with these types of questions. This workshop will concentrate on how to write exam
questions in an NBME style, whether to use for your own students or to hone your skills for future
opportunities in your career.
Workshop Agenda:
1) An introductory talk that explains the dos and don’ts of writing multiple choice questions, and
the logistics of the NBME format (20 minutes)
2) A breakout session where each table is assigned a topic and is asked to construct an appropriate
question. (20 minutes)
3) A critique session where each table will exchange their question with another table for analysis
and discussion. The general group will discuss these assessments. (20 minutes)
4) Summary and conclusions. (10 minutes)
Interactive Component:
Each participant will have a chance to interact with others at his/her table to discuss question
construction and analyze best practices. We hope that there will be participants from various
backgrounds who can learn from these interactions.
Take Home Product:
This workshop provides participants with the knowledge (including handout), skills and
opportunity to practice writing NBME style questions.
